The Little Cat and the Greedy Old Woman: Story and Pictures

Great for reading aloud!
"The Little Cat and the Greedy Old Woman" is a wonderful book for sharing aloud! The story is well-written, and the pictures are adorable and expressive. I am a children's librarian and have used it in storytimes with great success. The children just love this book!

Exceptional illustrations reveal cat's opinions!
Usually illustrations are just pictures. This artist has used illustrations to reveal the cat's feelings and thoughts in a manner any child can see and relate to. Exceptionally funny and clever artwork. My children love to look at this book themselves as they can SEE the cat think!

Luke's Favorite Book
The words are fun to read aloud, and the pictures are darling. I don't mind reading this book over and over and over again.

Granny Whiteoak Saves the Day.....
Granny Whiteoak remembers the good old days when she was a big football star, the trophies, the awards, and all the press coverage. Now, sitting up in bed, she hears on TV that her team is in big trouble. She jumps up, grabs her cane, and dives into the television set, landing on the football field, ready to play. Not to worry, Granny's here to save the day..... Bill Martin Jr and Michael Sampson have written a rip roarin', high spirited picture book that will have little sports fans cheering, as Granny runs onto the field in her bedroom slippers, and takes charge of the game. Their joyous, rhyming, energetic text is just perfect for reading aloud, and complemented by Michael Chesworth's charming and amusing illustrations. Youngsters 3-7 will enjoy the hilarious details and marvelous facial expressions in each picture. Be ready to laugh and cheer, each and every time you open this book as Granny scores one for the home team. Little Granny Quarterback is a winner!

Lord, Where Are You When Bad Things Happen?
Published in Paperback by Multnomah Publishers Inc. (December, 1992)
Author: Kay Arthur
Average review score:

This doesn't need to be a quesiton for you.
Can the Almighty really control everything or do some things slip through His grasp? Of course, there is the devil, and he is just as powerful as God, isn't he? Perhaps, he gets the upper hand on God, catching Him off-guard. Aren't they fighting constantly for control of the world?

Maybe God doesn't want to do anything about evil the world. Perhaps, He has a dark side that doesn't care about human suffering, or even enjoys it. Can He be trusted to do what's best for the world?

In this book, Kay Arthur answers your questions concerning evil in the world. She leads you through Habakkuk and many related texts to show you who God is and why we should trust Him. Learn the truth about the God of the Bible from the Bible itself. Discover how God will deal with evil and injustice, and what He's already done to curtail it.

Establish yourself in the truth of God's Word. Christianity's #1 problem needn't be a problem for you.

This Book Will Renew Your Faith in God
This book is awesome! It definitely answers the question of "Lord, where are You when bad things happen?" Unfortunately, sometimes God is using the bad to judge sin. This book is very thorough, though, and reminds us of the character of God. If we are obedient to Him, if we love Him, then He will turn the bad into our ultimate good. By looking at the words of Habakkuk the prophet, you will be challenged to say, "Lord, things look bad, but I trust You. As long as I have You, I will stand, no matter what." If you're only willing to read one book in the "Lord" series, choose this one! It will expose you to God's Word and renew your faith in God.

Lost Gold and Silver Mines of the Southwest
What is a book about lost mines without maps? The maps in the book were neat. Maybe the gold is still there?

Author seeks imput
I wrote the original book in 1963 (as Lost Desert Bonanzas) to mark 25 years of Desert Magazine lost mine stories. The main appeal was Norton Allen's great cartography (this is the only kind of map book that gets better as the maps are outdated by freeways and etc.). I would like input from treasure-seekers, but all I know about the particular lost mines is recounted in the book.

Lovers & Other Monsters: A Collection of Amorous Tales of Fantasy, Old and New
Published in Hardcover by Longmeadow Press (December, 1993)
Author: Marvin Kaye
Average review score:

Pleasantly surprising -- and twisted
This is the first compilation that I have ever read by Marvin Kaye, and I must say,he has excellent taste. These stories range from romantic to revolting; from midly funny to outright absurd. Some of the writers of these short stories I have now added to my list of favorite authors. The diversity is truly amazing. Mr. Kaye must have spent a great deal of time reading these stories and editing them into the perfect order. Absolutely wonderful!

One of Kaye's bets anthologies.
Marvi Kaye is an excellent anthology editor, and this is probably one of his finest anthologies. It includes not only short stories, but also poetry and even one short play. The dark aspects of love are thouroughly explored, in everything from stark realism, to fantasy, science fiction, horror, comedy; the variety is impressive, but Kaye manages to create unity of it all through his careful sub-thematic arrangement: Odd Couples, Worldly Love, Not of this World, Out of this World and Fatal Attractions. The selections flow into one another masterfully, and I can honestly say that not a single one of them could be considered bad;they were all of exceeding quality. I would be hard pressed to even recommend some of them over others; the book is so well arranged that each individual piece seems to play its part for the perfect final effect.

Loving Life After 60: Celebrating the Autumn of Your Life
Published in Paperback by Willow Creek Press (May, 2000)
Author: Tom Paugh
Average review score:

Don't Wait For Age 60 To Read This Book!
This book is a 'must' read for everyone over age 30. Although it's not his target audience, Tom Paugh gives the younger generation an important perspective regarding the obstacles and challenges facing their parents generation that is simply not available in any other medium. In addition, there are many lessons of life to be learned that can make living the 30's, 40's and 50's much more meaningful and complete. Read this book slowly...a chapter a day. Discuss its contents with your spouse, a neighbor, and/or a friend. This book will touch your heart and will challenge you to consider ways to prepare for the days and years ahead. Don't wait for 60...read it now!

How did Tom know all that about me?
I have just completed reading of LOVING LIFE AFTER SIXTY: CELEBRATING THE AUTUMN OFYOUR LIFE. My wife gave it to me on the occasion of my 60th birthday. I thought, Oh no, not another book...and set it aside for a couple of months. Bad mistake. When I did pick it up, I found it difficult to put down. I was particularly drawn to the way Tom Paugh reminded the reader that there is really little new under the sun. By mixing the wisdom of the ages, from a rich variety of sources, with his own reflections and wisdom about life, he connects the reader with both the past and the present. Although the topics he has chosen to write about are obvious to anyone over 60, he writes about each of these in a delightful, conversational and narrative manner. His "letters never sent" are worth the price of the book. I keep asking myself, "How did Tom know all that about me?" A host of my post-60 friends can expect a copy of this stirring little book from me for Christmas 2000.

Lucky Mrs. Ticklefeather

I'm as happy as can be to have found you Mrs. T . . .
The Cooksey children growing up in the '50s and '60s were as lucky as lucky can be, we had a mother who read to us. And our favorite Little Golden Book was -- alas -- Lucky Mrs. Ticklefeather. Sadly, after six children the great storybook of Mrs. Ticklefeather and her puffin Paul was literally read to death and the book disintegrated. We, the six children, grew up and had children of our own and in the grand tradition of storytime, searched high and low for a copy of this darling book. I could still remember just how the cover looked with Mrs. T and her puffin playing their violins. I have yet to pass a "tall, tall, terribly tall building" and not wonder if in fact it might be where Mrs. Ticklefeather still resides. In the dear lady's honor, I too love sunflowers. I can hardly believe my good fortune to have found this favorite book. My sons are too old, but my granddaughter, born seven months ago, will have the book waiting on her Nonnie's shelf for when she is a little older and can hear the story. This is such an endearing story, I cannot understand why it didn't become the classic that the "Saggy, Baggy Elephant" did -- I shall simply rejoice that we've found it now in a re-issue.

Mrs. Ticklefeather and Friend Are Both Back !
I came upon this reissue quite by accident and laughed out loud to see it available once again. This was one of my favorite childhood books, given to me at Christmas of 1952. Even at the time of its original issuance, the old-fashioned Mrs. Ticklefeather, her Puffin named Paul, the rather antiquated language, and of course, the wonderful illustrations of J.P. Miller all worked together to make this book a delight for young children, probably ages 4-8. The silly situations that the policeman finds while in search of the missing Paul add humor which a young child will enjoy. If the late author, Dorothy Kunhardt, were alive today, she'd be thrilled to know that yet another generation of young children are poised and ready to enjoy her book again. But then again, Little Golden Books always did know what children liked to read!

Luke Short: A Biography

Author: Wayne Short

Luke Short: a biography
This book is a great read for anyone interested in the life and times of one of the more colorful characters in the western expansion era. I enjoyed and learned of Luke Short and how his life interacted and effected some of the other well known characters of the time. I wish this author knew others of the same era as well, that he might write of them as well. Hated to see this book come to an end.

Luke Short: A Biography
I loved this book! The author totally draws you in and fills this book with such anecdotes, facts, speculations, and often subtle humor that you cannot put it down. I was eager to read this book and learn more about a less-known famous figure from the Old West, and have also read Short's other books. I heartily reccomend all of them to anyone who enjoys humorous non-fiction as well as nondisputable facts. Short has the cunning wit of an intellectual and the story telling gift of a grandfather.

Lynch Law

History
I just returned from the Pekin area. I finished reading "Lynch Law" this past winter. I enjoyed detail the writer used in describing the area. I felt like I knew the area when I drove arrived in the Pekin area. I found the book to be acruate in its lay out of the towns and area. I plan to reread the book now that I have been in the area. I enjoyed the mixture of history and mystery.

A Great Example of Midwest History!
One of the most realistic writings of midwestern history that I've ever read. The author made you feel like you were right there during the trial and lynching. What an exciting book! We are expecting great things from this author!
